Allison and Vistrus sit in the living room, watching the evening news. The anchor smiles next to a generic drugs-are-bad, ominous, dark graphic, all topped off with a red circle slashed through it. Allison watches worry pour out of her father’s eyes. Vistrus tries to watch the news without glancing at his daughter. He knows that she is not involved with such activities, but he also knows peer pressure ofttimes weighs more than one can bear.

“Don’t you remember talking about this, dad?” Allison points to the screen.

His daughter’s voice shakes him from his thoughts. “No. Yes, of course. Distractions have gotten to me lately.”

Allison sees his stare fixed upon the newscaster. She doesn’t have to have a child to know his thoughts. “You know I don’t do that? Right. Not my cup of joe.”

Vistrus huffs in amusement. “Tea, dear.”

“What about it?”

“The saying is ‘cup of tea’ not ‘cup of joe,’” he says, taking a small moment to impart some knowledge.

Allison shrugs. “Either way. Nothing here like that.”

Vistrus crosses his brow at her choice of words but decides to leave it be, for the moment at least. There’s always time to be a father.

An alert chimes on her phone.

[Connor: Come outside.]

A quick response back.

[Allison: Come inside.]

Only a second passes before there is a knock at the door. Again, Allison sends a text.

[Allison: Come in.]

“Were you just waiting outside for me?” Allison shouts to the door.

Connor steps inside, making his way to the living room, followed by Scarlett, Duncan, and Brianna, the sight of whom causes Allison’s chest to tighten up.

“Yeah, we figured you’d just come out,” Connor starts as the news exposé catches his eye. “We are checking out a new place tonight. Thought you’d like to join us.”

“What new place?” Her tone less than convinced. She looks at his T-shirt. “Coma Noir?”

Connor looks at his new shirt and smiles. “New album, new shirt. I think you’ll love it.”

Connor watches as Vistrus is too entranced in the news to pay attention to their conversation. Connor nods in short bursts to the television. “The place our new friend from Ducky’s recommended. I think you should come with us.”

Duncan nudges Brianna with his elbow. Catching the drift of his poke, she chimes in, “Yeah, Al, come with us. It’ll be fun.”

Allison tosses glances between Connor and Brianna, caught in the emotional tug-of-war she has been playing against herself. A game she has yet to make any progress in that wears her down little by little. After an extended moment, of which the understood meaning remains unspoken among friends, she turns to her father. “Dad?”

His attention turns away from the news as the exposé concludes, cutting away to a commercial. “Have fun, dear. If you find yourself in any predicament, call me. No questions asked.”

Allison hops up. “Of course.”

They all exit, leaving Vistrus to his vice of cutting a cigar butt and grabbing some matches. He finishes watching the evening news. Halfway through his cigar, a knock at the door disrupts his tranquil solitude.

Puffing away, he opens the door.
